An ancient temple that was built in 705 (Keiun 2) by Otomo Koma at the request of Emperor Monmu. It is the 21st place of worship among the 33 places in the Saigoku region, and is visited by worshipers from all over the country. The main hall, which was rebuilt in 1735 (Kyoho 20), as well as the Niomon Gate and Tahoto Pagoda, are impressive buildings built during the Edo period.
The Yakushi Nyorai, the principal image of worship enshrined in the main hall, is a completely hidden Buddha, and the Reisho principal image, Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu, is unveiled once every 33 years.
The statue of Shaka Nyorai in Nirvana, which is said to have been made in the Kamakura period and is enshrined in the same hall, is also famous. Because it can be directly touched, it is called "Nadebutsu" and is believed to cure illnesses.
The garden that spreads out to the south of the shoin has been designated as a place of scenic beauty by Kyoto Prefecture. It is said to have been created in the Edo period. The Tahoto Pagoda, which stands at the rear on the left, is taken in as a borrowed scenery, and the artificial mountain built to match it and the skillfully placed stonework are also a must-see. Seasonal plants and old trees also add flavor.
