A new restaurant has opened in Nishijin where you can enjoy barrel sake, which is associated with fine dining, on a daily basis. The owner, who used to work at breweries in Fushimi and Hokuriku, sources sake from his own perspective, and pairs it with stone-ground juwari soba (buckwheat noodles) blended with peeled kernels that are ground to a very coarse consistency just before being served.
The buckwheat noodles are made by grinding and kneading the peeled buckwheat seeds from Kyotamba on the spot after ordering, and are hot, chewy, and delicious. It is a must-try dish for many repeat customers. Photo: (small) 500 yen
The menu is basically a set meal consisting of sake, soba, two entrées, and other items. Refills of sake are available at a discount. The restaurant is located in the eye-catching white-walled building "Tsurezure nishijin" in an alley in the Kitano shopping arcade, and is currently operating on a temporary lease. Open Tuesdays through Thursdays, but check SNS and the storefront for announcements.
