Tsuguharu Fujita: Tracing the Journey of the Heart - Letters and Handi...
The Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art opened in 1996 as a restoration of the English-style "Oyamazaki Villa" built between the Taisho and early Showa eras as a villa for the late businessman Shotaro Kaga of the Kansai region. The museum features works related to the folk art movement supported by Tamesaburo Yamamoto, the first president of Asahi Beer Company (now Asahi Breweries, Ltd.), who was a close friend of Kaga, as well as "Waterlilies" by Claude Monet.
The Chichu-kan "Underground Jewel Box," where Claude Monet's "Waterlilies" are exhibited, was added to the museum after its opening, designed by architect Tadao Ando. The passageway to the subterranean pavilion, which is semi-subterranean to preserve the landscape, is covered with glass, allowing visitors to view the greenery of the garden.
[The Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art was opened by local volunteers, Kyoto Prefecture, Oyamazaki Town, and Asahi Breweries, Ltd. in cooperation to protect the architecture and surrounding nature. Enjoy the view from the coffee shop in the main building, which is steeped in history and has been carefully preserved by the local people.
