[2023] Never remove it! Recommended for New Year's visit to the gods of Kyoto...
Ishimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine, located in the southwest of the city, has been prayed to as the guardian deity of the capital since 859 (Jougan era), along with Enryaku-ji Temple on Hieizan (northeast), which is the "demon's gate". It is commonly known as "Yawata no Hachiman-san. The Hachiman-zukuri main shrine, the only one of its kind in existence in Japan, was declared a national treasure in February 2016 in recognition of its historical value. The shrine pavilions protected and built by four military commanders, Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi and Hideyori Toyotomi, and Iemitsu Tokugawa, are like a collection of works of art.
Approximately 150 colorful sculptures surround the main shrine. The most common motifs are birds, including quails, sparrows, and cormorants. A dove, which is the messenger of Hachiman-daijin, is used as a fortune, and a red seal with a dove character can be obtained upon request. In the shrine garden, there is a monument to Edison, who succeeded in lighting an incandescent light bulb for a long period of time using bamboo from Otokoyama.
