This Zen temple is located halfway up Arashiyama, about 1km from Togetsukyo Bridge along the south bank of the Oi River, and after climbing the zigzagging stone steps. In autumn, you can see the bright red leaves of Kameran Gorge. From the reception hall built on the rock face, you can see not only the city of Kyoto but also the 36 peaks of Higashiyama and Mt. Hiei. In 1614 (Keicho 19), Ryoi Kadokura, a wealthy merchant who contributed to river development, relocated the Gosaga Emperor's prayer hall from Saga Chuin Temple and built it. It has become a recreational area for writers and artists of each era, including Matsuo Basho and Natsume Soseki, and appears in their works.
