The museum was opened in 1933 as the "Tairyo Memorial Kyoto Art Museum" to commemorate the great enthronement of the Showa Emperor. The museum's collection includes approximately 3,800 works of modern and contemporary Japanese and Western-style painting, sculpture, and crafts, mainly from Kyoto since the Meiji period. The main building, designed by Kenjiro Maeda, is the oldest existing public art museum in Japan.
In 2020, the museum reopened under the name "Kyoto Kyocera Museum of Art". While preserving and inheriting the design of the main building, the museum was reborn as an art museum more open to the public, with a new wing for contemporary art, a café and museum store, and other new facilities.
