It is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto, and there is a record that the tamagaki of the shrine was repaired in 90 BC. Together with Kamigamo Shrine, it enshrines the gods of the ancient Kamo clan, and its official name is Kamomioya Shrine. In 1994, it was registered as a World Heritage Site. A variety of Shinto rituals are held here, including the Aoi Matsuri (Kamo Matsuri), one of Kyoto's three major festivals.
During the fall foliage season, the maples, zelkova trees, and other trees in the Tadasu-no-mori forest cover the grounds, turning the forest red and yellow. The best time to see the foliage is from early to mid-December, which is relatively late, so you can enjoy the autumn foliage at your leisure.
