Autumn night time viewing / Daigoji Temple
The temple was founded in 874 by Seiho Rigen Daishi, a grandson of Kukai. The temple's territory encompasses the entire Daigo Mountain area, with its natural surroundings spread out on top of the mountain and at its foot. The temple has more than 100,000 treasures, including the five-story pagoda, the oldest wooden structure in Kyoto Prefecture (National Treasure), the Kondo (Golden Hall), which was relocated from Wakayama by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, and the seated statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva, an important cultural property by Kaikei, which is registered as a World Cultural Heritage site.
National Treasure Karamon Gate and Cherry Blossoms
It has long been known as "Hana-no-Daigo," or the "Daigo of Flowers," a cherry blossom viewing spot where Lord Hideyoshi held his "Daigo Hanami" (cherry blossom viewing) party. About 700 cherry trees, including weeping cherry trees, someiyoshino cherry trees, mountain cherry trees, and yaezakura cherry trees, are in full bloom one after another, making cherry blossom viewing enjoyable over a long period of time.
Autumn leaves color the vermilion-lacquered Benten-do
In the fall, the entire Daigo Mountain area within the temple grounds is dyed in autumnal hues. The most beautiful area is around Bentendo, which stands by the pond. The autumn leaves surrounding the pond and the vermilion-lacquered hall are reflected on the surface of the water like a mirror. The autumn leaves and historical buildings such as the five-story pagoda, a national treasure built in the Heian period (794-1192), also make for a magnificent sight. The maple trees and dodan-tsutsuji (azalea) on the grounds of the temple are also in full color, creating a special atmosphere unique to this time of year.
