The castle was built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, and became the Nijo Rikyu, a villa of the Imperial Family in 1884. The following year, the castle was opened to the public as "Imperial Gift Nijo Castle. In 1867, the 15th Shogun, Yoshinobu Yoshinobu, announced his intention to return to the shogunate, and the castle became the scene of many historical events. In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
Inside the castle, you can enjoy a wide variety of cherry blossoms, about 300 trees of 50 different varieties, including wild cherry blossoms, satozakura, and double red weeping cherry blossoms. It is also known as a famous place for autumn leaves, and various trees such as ginkgo and maple are beautifully colored.
