Honpo-ji Temple, which has a deep connection with artists
It is one of the eight head temples of Nichiren Shu in Kyoto, and was founded in 1436 (Eikyo 8). It is known as the family temple of Hon'ami Koetsu, an artist active from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period, and his dry landscape garden "Tomoe no Niwa" is one of the highlights of the temple. The temple is also related to Hasegawa Tohaku, a painter active during the same period, and its collection of "The Nirvana of the Buddha" is said to be one of the three most famous Nirvana paintings in Kyoto, along with those of Sennyuji Temple and Tofukuji Temple.
