Ninnaji Temple

[Ninnaji Temple] has a deep connection with the Imperial Family

It was founded by the 59th Emperor Uda in 888 (Ninna 4) in the early Heian period. After Emperor Uda abdicated, he became a priest and lived at the temple, hence the name 'Omuro Imperial Palace.' It has a deep connection with the imperial family, with members of the imperial family serving as chief priests until the Meiji period.

The temple grounds are lined with buildings erected in the Edo period (1603-1868), including the five-story pagoda and Nioimon gate. The temple is famous for Omuro-zakura, late-blooming cherry blossoms that are at their best from early to mid-April, and the autumn leaves that decorate the majestic five-story pagoda and other structures are exceptionally beautiful. In 1994, the area was registered as a World Heritage site.
