Ninnaji Temple

[Ninnaji Temple] has a deep connection with the Imperial Family

The temple was founded by the 59th Emperor Uda in 888 (Ninna 4) in the early Heian period. Emperor Uda became a monk after abdicating the throne and lived at the temple, which is why it was also called "Omuro Gosho" (Imperial Household Office). The temple has a strong connection with the imperial family, with a member of the imperial family serving as its chief priest until the Keio period.

The temple grounds are lined with buildings erected in the Edo period (1603-1868), including the five-story pagoda and Nioimon gate. The temple is famous for Omuro-zakura, late-blooming cherry blossoms that are at their best from early to mid-April, and the autumn leaves that decorate the majestic five-story pagoda and other structures are exceptionally beautiful. In 1994, the area was registered as a World Heritage site.
