The year 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit! Recommended for a zodiac year pilgrimage...
Yasaka Shrine has a deep connection with the people of Kyoto, where the Gion Festival has been held since the Heian period (794-1185) to pray for the elimination of epidemics and other calamities, and on New Year's Eve, people make a pilgrimage to pray for good health and safety in the following year. The Yasaka Shrine is the place where the spirit of the god returns from the portable shrine during the Kanko Matsuri, the climax of the Gion Festival. The main hall of Yasaka Shrine was designated a national treasure in 2020.
The current shrine pavilion was rebuilt in 1654 by the fourth shogun, Tokugawa Ietsuna. The shrine was recognized not only for its architectural style called "Gion-zukuri," in which the worship hall and main shrine are covered by a large roof, but also for its cultural and historical significance, which has been passed down through the ages in cooperation with its bearers for over 1,150 years since the Gion Festival was first held in the area. While taking your time to visit the Migozensha Shrine and other shrines on the grounds of the shrine, pray for peace and happiness in the new year.
