Kiyomizu Temple

The stage of Kiyomizu protruding on a slope called Kinunkei in the south front of the main hall. It is about 13m high, as tall as a 4-story building.

[Kiyomizu-dera] as an opportunity to regain a pure heart

Kiyomizudera is one of Kyoto's representative temples. In December 2020, the first major renovation in half a century was completed, and the main hall and Kiyomizu stage were refurbished.
The autumn leaves and cherry blossoms that color the vast precincts and the surrounding mountains are also famous.
From late November to early December, approximately 1,000 maple trees and mountain maples turn red, dyeing the precincts red. The contrast between Okunoin and the main hall known as Kiyomizu stage is a must-see.
From the end of March to the beginning of April, about 1,000 wild cherry trees and Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom, and the view from the main hall is exceptionally beautiful.
During the special nighttime viewings held during both the autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons, the grounds are lit up and enveloped in a mysterious atmosphere.

Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu-dera has watched over visitors to this area for more than 1,240 years since it was founded by Enchin Shonin in 778 (Houki 9). So far, it has been burnt down more than 10 times due to misfortune, such as being involved in power struggles and burning down, burning down in the Onin War. It is said that the temple and the people have rebuilt their hearts as one every time they have suffered hardships, and the present figure is based on history.

The stage board is replaced with a new cypress board. The gihoju on the balustrade was made in the Edo period.

The Gohonzon, which is said to have been carried out each time it was destroyed by fire, is the eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon statue that changes its appearance and lends a helping hand in response to the requests of all living beings. Because it is a secret Buddha, the door of the shrine in the main hall is usually closed, and you can see it in person once every 33 years, and the next time will be in 2033. Until then, you can see the figure in the omaedachi that imitates the principal image. “By putting your hands together in the main hall, I want you to feel a new awareness that you don’t get in everyday life. I think your senses will become clearer,” said Teruhisa Onishi. The tranquility you get from visiting Kiyomizu-dera Temple in the midst of nature will clear your mind and remind you of who you are.
