Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine

Famous place for kirishima azaleas dedicated to Lord Michizane [Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine]

When Michizane Sugawara was transferred to Dazaifu, he stopped by this shrine and enshrined a wooden statue made by Michizane himself as the sacred body of the shrine. Since then, the area has been revered by the imperial family, and Hachijogaike Pond was constructed by Prince Tomochu Hachijo, who built Katsura Rikyu, a detached palace in Katsura City. The pond is known for its beautiful Kirishimatsutsuji azaleas planted on both sides of the central bank that passes the pond, forming a crimson tunnel in late April, when the azaleas are at their best.
