A day to feel at [Kozanji] in Takao, a place related to Myoe Shonin...
Halfway up Mt. Ogura, it is said that the Heian period poet Fujiwara no Teika once had his mountain lodge, Shigure-tei. Founded in 1596, the temple's name is derived from the Buddhist term 'Jojakkodo', which means the most utopia in the world where Buddha lives.
In autumn, the approach to the 12-meter tall Tahoto Pagoda behind the main hall is colored with autumn leaves, making it a scenic spot where you can see not only Kyoto city, but also Mt. Hiei if the weather is good.
In spring, the green leaves of the maple leaves are filtered through by the sunlight, creating a view that looks like a green filter. If you pass the temple gate, the Niomon gate, the main hall, and climb the approach to the Tahoto pagoda, you will be greeted with a magnificent view of Kyoto. There are two types of green maple, the Japanese maple and the slightly larger maple, so compare them while walking around the 20,000 tsubo that can be viewed.
The oldest building in the precincts is this Niomon. The green maple tunnel that dyes the stone pavement in light green and the stately thatched roof create a fantastic world. The Niomon statue was created by Unkei.
If you go through the Niomon Gate and proceed to the right, the slope called Sueyoshizaka continues, and the ground and slope are covered with moss. In the large precincts, there are about 30 kinds of moss that adapt to various environments such as shade and tree trunks.
The contrast with the autumn leaves dyed in red and yellow is beautiful, but the modern scenery composed of green maple and bamboo forest is also wonderful. The sound of bamboo leaves swaying in the wind is soothing and makes you forget the time.
The 12-meter Tahoto pagoda towering behind the main hall is Momoyama-style with a sense of stability and dynamism. When you climb up to this area, the observatory is right there. You can see not only Kyoto city but also Mt. Hiei if the weather is good.
If you go up the stone steps from the Niomon, you will reach the main hall, which is said to have been relocated from Fushimi Castle. Looking at how buildings and nature harmonize beautifully, we realize that beauty that has been protected by human care heals people.
