Tonoda Shokudo is located about a 10-minute walk from the Hachijo Exit of Kyoto Station.
When you rattle open the sliding door, you are greeted by a nostalgic space with well-worn desks and chairs and neatly arranged menu tags.
Once you sit down, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time to the Showa Era (1926-1989). This retro atmosphere is popular, and young customers are often seen. The store's clientele is diverse, including local regulars, students on school excursions accompanied by cab drivers, and foreign tourists.

We would like to introduce three menus that we particularly recommend.

Tanitan-don is one of the most popular menu items at Tonden Shokudo. Beef cooked in a sweet and spicy sauce is topped with an egg and green onions.
The sweetness of the beef fat goes well with rice. It is filled with plenty of meat and is very satisfying. This is the menu item that the author has ordered the most repeatedly so far, and if you are not sure which one to try from among the many menu items, I recommend you order it first.

We often see regular customers ordering this Chinese noodle. The clear broth is topped with grilled pork, plenty of green onions and pepper. It is the embodiment of what everyone imagines chuka-soba to be, with a broth and straight noodles that are very tasty.
Kyoto is also a fierce battleground for ramen, and while there are many famous stores, the traditional Chinese noodle stores are a rare find.

Sometimes I have an irresistible craving for curry rice. Served with a generous portion of rice and roux, it is perfect for when you are hungry. The umami-rich curry roux, perhaps based on curry udon soup stock, is irresistible. Ingredients are beef and thick onions, making this curry rice simple and never boring. The red fukujinzuke pickles served on the side are also a good assistant.

In addition, we also recommend the delicious and dusty Ten-Tsuji-don (bowl of rice topped with tempura and vegetables) and small plates of sushi.

All of the menu items at Tonoda Shokudo are reasonably priced at less than 1,000 yen. You can enjoy a Kyoto-style lunch without feeling self-conscious. If you want to go to a restaurant where the locals go, like a retro atmosphere, or like Japanese food, this is the place for you.
