Last June, "Persimmon and Spice Curry" opened in a residential area not far from Katsura Station, operating on Wednesdays only on a temporary lease basis. The restaurant is run by Mr. and Mrs. Nishida, the sixth generation of a farming family that has been in Kyoto for more than 100 years and produces Fuyu persimmons and bamboo shoots, which are specialty products of the Nishiyama area. In the course of farming, out-of-spec products are inevitably produced, such as damaged or misshapen products. After much trial and error, they came up with curry as a way to bring out the charm of these products, which are only a little inferior in appearance but taste the same, and to make effective use of them without waste.
