Taste around Kyoto [Kitano Tenmangu Shrine] 2024 Recommended La...
The Leaf editorial staff went inside the "Tenjin Market" held on December 25, 2023, a traditional event to mark the end of the New Year's holiday season in Kyoto! The shrine was filled with items that remind us of the end of the New Year, such as New Year's shimenawa ornaments, leaf buttons, and salmon rolled roughly to make one feel the season is almost over. The entire precincts of the shrine and the Gozen Street running along the east side of the site were lined with more than 200 stores of various genres, where many people, from locals to foreign tourists, were enjoying "Tenjin-san" in their own way.
Tenjin Market is a fair held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, which, along with Kobo Market held at Toji Temple in Kyoto, is also known as one of the two major antique markets in Kyoto. Starting at around 6:30 in the early morning, there are hundreds to sometimes thousands of stalls selling gourmet foods, antiques, antique sundries, secondhand clothes, and more. It is fun just to stroll around, and if you are lucky, you may be able to find a bargain. The number of stalls changes from month to month, so it is always a good time to see what kind of stores are open.
The "Hatsu Tenjin" in 2024 will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at around 6:30 a.m. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane (Lord Suga), the famous god of learning. The early plum blossoms are said to start blooming after the New Year, so why not visit Hatsutenjin to both pray and see the plum blossoms?
