This summer, a pure coffee shop [Cafe Suzuki], loved by locals for 53 years at this location, closed its doors. Koki Takenaka opened a new store here because of a chance encounter. When I visited the store for the first time, I saw the locals gathering there and thought it was a nice place. I wanted to carry on the coffee shop culture that has taken root in Kyoto," says Takenaka. The retro furniture, including the counter, sofas, and crafted glass partitions, are the same as in the previous store. Elderly neighbors chat over a cup of coffee, and the atmosphere is so relaxed that it is hard to believe that the store has recently opened.
Mr. Takenaka, who says he has always loved old things, has harmonized the newly added vessels and antique cash registers as if they have been there for a long time. He has also thought of the menu to match the atmosphere. The fried chicken is made with a recipe I learned from the wife of Cafe Suzuki. Pudding, omelette rice, and other dishes were made with the menu of a pure coffee shop in mind.
The surprisingly low price of 580 yen for a morning set that includes a drink is also designed to encourage former regulars to keep coming back. The high cost of living has made it tough, to be honest, but...," he said, conveying his passion for preserving the coffee shop culture and the customers who love it.
