The popular morning set meal, available only from opening to 10:00 a.m., is 440 yen and includes a choice of one side dish for 160 yen, a small bowl of rice, miso soup, and a raw egg. On this day, I chose the grilled salmon.
Founded more than 50 years ago, the current owner is the second generation, Tadaaki Murakami. The showcase and refrigerator just inside are lined with about 20 different kinds of side dishes.
The side dishes, made from ingredients purchased at the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market every morning, are reasonably priced at 160 to 380 yen, including sashimi of tuna for 270 yen and braised flatfish for 330 yen. Murakami Shokudo's style is to select a side dish of your choice and eat it with rice and miso soup. The taste, which has been passed down from the previous generation, is homey and comforting, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is also relaxing. It is no wonder that Murakami Shokudo is popular early in the morning with people coming off the night shift or working at the central market, and in the evening with regulars in the neighborhood who enjoy a drink with side dishes.
