古くから「花の醍醐」とも呼ばれる桜の名所で、秀吉公が「醍醐の花見」を行ったことでも知られる。枝垂れ桜、ソメイヨシノ、山桜、八重桜など約700本の桜が次々と見頃を迎え、長期間にわたって花見が楽しめる。

また秋には境内の醍醐山一帯が錦秋に染まる。なかでも最も美しいのは、池の畔に立つ弁天堂周辺。池を囲むように並ぶ紅葉は、朱塗りのお堂とともに鏡のように水面に映し出される。平安時代建立の国宝・五重塔などの歴史的建造物と紅葉の共演も見事。境内のもみじやドウダンツツジが色鮮やかに染まるこの季節ならではの風情も格別だ。

Sanboin special view is 500 yen for junior high school students and older; admission to Kami-Daigo is free.
