A long-established store takes on a new challenge with Japanese sweets [Honke Owariya Confectionery]

September 16, 2020 open

Honke Owariya, known as a long-established buckwheat noodle shop, was founded by an ancestor who was called to Kyoto from Owari as a confectioner about 550 years ago during the Muromachi Period. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the first generation started a buckwheat noodle shop and became the official buckwheat noodle maker, and has had both buckwheat noodle and confectionery businesses. The store, designed by the hot designer Teruhiro Yanagihara, has a neat appearance with clay walls with buckwheat hulls kneaded into them and a large, massive, polished counter. The counter is lined with representative confections invented by successive owners since the Meiji era (1868-1912), including buckwheat cakes (130 yen per piece), soba boards, and soba warabimochi (buckwheat sticky rice cakes). New brand of the 16th generation of the current ownerNo.16" is a fusion of chocolate and soba noodles, and we look forward to its further development into new territory.
