The castle was built in 1622 by Naotsugu, the son of Ii Naomasa, one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokugawa. Since then, the castle has been used as a residence for 14 generations of the Ii family, which has produced many feudal lords. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the castle was sold and dismantled due to an ordinance to abolish castles, but it was preserved by order of Emperor Meiji when he passed through Hikone after his tour of the city. It is one of the 12 existing castle towers, and the castle tower is designated as a national treasure. In recent years, Hikone is also known as the base of "Hikonyan," a local character that sparked the local character boom.
