In 1175, Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect, built a thatched hut near the current Miedo Hall. In the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu, who believed in the Jodo sect of Buddhism, established the temple as his family temple in Kyoto, which led to the expansion of the temple territory. The national treasure Sanmon is the largest wooden gate in the world.
In spring, cherry blossom trees can be seen in a wide area from Mt. Higashiyama Kacho to Higashioji Street. In autumn, the autumn leaves of Japanese maple and zelkova are beautiful, and the autumn leaves of Yuzen-en and Hojo garden are especially spectacular. During the special nighttime viewings during both seasons, various parts of the precincts are lit up, including Japan's largest wooden double gate, the "National Treasure Sanmon Gate."
Also, the large bell on New Year's Eve, known as one of Japan's three major temple bells, is famous, and the sight of 17 monks working together to ring it is a masterpiece.
