Tea latte specialty store from Japan [CHAVATY] opens in Arashiyama. Arashiyama limited menu too!
Did you know that there is a tea latte specialty store in Omotesando, Tokyo, where people stand in line for over an hour? Recently, we hear of tapioca milk tea and cheese tea, all of which originated overseas. However, in Japan, "tea" is such an indispensable part of the daily life that there is a word for it. With this strong desire, the Japan-based tea latte specialty store [CHAVATY] was born to introduce the latest Japanese tea culture.
Starting with the Omotesando store that opened in July 2018, the second store in Jagarta, Indonesia, and now the third store [CHAVATY kyoto arashiyama] is now open. The "Leaf" editorial department had the opportunity to visit the store.
CHAVATY kyoto arashiyama was established in the Nakanoshima district of the Arashiyama area, near Hankyu Arashiyama Station. As you approach the entrance of the store, you will see a sign that reads "Okaffe" (Okaffe). In fact, this shop opened at the same time as the Okaffe cafe on Ayakoji Takakura Nishiiru.
[There are 18 seats in the space shared with [Okaffe], and we decided to sit there first and have a typical tea latte.
The Uva Tea Latte uses high-grade Sri Lankan Uva, one of the three most famous teas in the world. They actually went to a tea plantation in the highlands of Sri Lanka and saw how wonderful it is, and decided to use this tea. We tasted all of the matcha and hojicha teas, and they were all moderately sweetened so that the flavor of the tea leaves could be fully appreciated. Compared to commercially available milk teas, I tend to think that they are not sweet enough. However, the tea is full-bodied and the flavor of the tea leaves can be felt, and because it is so refreshing, even a large bottle of tea can be drunk all the way through to the end.
The best thing to have with such tea lattes are scone sandwiches and macaroons.
Scone Sando's scones are moist and chewy, thanks to the generous amount of butter used. The Leaf editorial staff, who used to dislike scones because they were dry, loves the moistness of these scones. The scones are filled with homemade fruit jam or dried fruit-nut honey and salted whipped butter. There are four jam choices: "Tangy Strawberry" with strawberry and blood orange; "Citrus Pink" with two kinds of grapefruit and pink pepper; "Tropical Vanilla" with banana, pineapple, mango, and vanilla; and "Griot Mint" with sour cherry and mint.
All are unique, and the "Leaf" editorial staff, who likes sweet, was captivated by the Tropical Vanilla. The Dried Fruit Nut Honey contains figs, raisins, and four kinds of nuts. It can be held in one hand and is perfect for takeout, so it is a recommended item when you are hungry on a stroll in Arashiyama.
The macarons come in three flavors: matcha, uva, and hojicha. Not only are they sweet, but you can also taste the delicious tea leaves here as well. Like the scone sandwiches, these macarons are also exclusive to the Arashiyama store, so be sure to check them out.
Another recommendation was the tea soft serve ice cream. There are three types of tea soft serve ice cream: uba, matcha, and hojicha, but the one we tasted was uba. I was so impressed by the direct feeling of the tea leaves in the soft serve ice cream that I wondered if I had ever tasted tea leaves like this before. Many customers order Uva at first, but many repeat customers prefer the mellow taste of hojicha.
Other items include the "Snow Shake," a cold frozen tea latte available only in summer for 680 yen, the "And Tea Latte" for those who are greedy and want both a tea latte and tea soft serve ice cream for 780 yen, and the "Uva Straight Tea" for 480 yen.
We take our hats off to CHAVATY for its lineup, which clearly shows the concept of wanting people from Japan and around the world to enjoy the unique tea leaves that only CHAVATY can offer.
Recently, many new stores have opened in the Arashiyama area that are not only recommended for tourists, but also for Kyoto residents. We encourage everyone to take a look at CHAVATY and the other stores that are opening one after another in the Arashiyama area!
