Castella Udono was established in Kyoto in 1971 as a sponge cake specialty store. The founder, Tadaaki Udono, who hails from Nagasaki Prefecture, the birthplace of sponge cake, honed his skills at a sponge cake company before setting up his own business in Kyoto, and in 2001 opened a store near Enmachi Station. Each sponge cake is carefully baked by hand using the same method that has been handed down since the company's founding, and the craftsmanship shines through in the moist, baked dough. The store's most popular gift item, an assortment of plain castella and matcha sponge cake, is now available for the first time by mail order. Don't miss out and get your hands on one.
