From February 1 (Sat) to April 13 (Sun), 2025, "Higashiyama Kaii and the Journey of Landscape Painting from Japan to the World" will be held at the Fukuda Art Museum in Arashiyama.
Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999) is a nationally known master landscape painter who continued to paint until he was 90 years old. His landscapes of lakeside lures of clear blue, dazzling fresh greenery, and breathtakingly beautiful autumn foliage, all of which he painted during his travels around the world, possess a universality and sense of beauty that transcends time and resonates with people of all ages.
The exhibition introduces a number of Kaii's paintings based on Japanese and European landscapes. [In addition to "Evening Cool," which depicts the Shugakuin Imperial Villa in Kyoto and is on display for the first time at the Fukuda Art Museum, the exhibition will also feature "Hana Akari," which depicts weeping cherry blossoms in the Gion area of Maruyama Park in Kyoto.
Also on view are works by Yokoyama Taikan, Hishida Shunso, Takeuchi Seiho, Yamamoto Shunkyo, and others who, like Kaii, traveled to Europe and the United States in search of new opportunities. Also on display are works by Camille Corot, Claude Monet, and other overseas artists whom Kaii admired.
