Nijo Castle Paintings on Barrier Paintings Exhibition and Collection Hall (in Nijo Castle)
The spring exhibition of original paintings from the Ninomaru Palace (Important Cultural Property), "The Great Hall of the Nijo Detached Palace: The First Room" will be held at the Nijo Castle Museum of Art until June 23 (Sun.), 2024.
During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Great Hall of Nijo Castle was the place where the shoguns officially met with the Tokugawa Shogun and was the most prestigious place to display their authority. The wall painting in the first room of the hall, painted by the shogunate's official painter Kano Tanyu, is thought to express the shogun's wish for the eternal prosperity of the Tokugawa family, and the pine trees designed around the room emphasize the dignity of the shogun seated in the center. It is said that Emperor Taisho, who was the Crown Prince at the time of Nijo Rikyu, sat here.
Enjoy the fascination of the paintings on the walls that added color to the era while thinking about the history of the building.
