Shingonshu head temple Toji precincts, dining hall (Jikido)
The "World Heritage Site To-ji Temple Special Exhibition 2024: Kusaba Kazuhisa's Exhibition of Ceramic Paintings" is being held at the Jikido, a dining hall on the temple grounds, until May 11, 2024 (Sat).
Tousai-ga is a type of pottery painting by Kazuhisa Kusaba, an artist born in Saga Prefecture, famous for Arita-yaki porcelain, who, after years of research and trial and error, sublimated the techniques of Arita-yaki porcelain and used them in his paintings. The most distinctive feature of his paintings is the unique colors he has created and the way the colors change depending on the angle of view, expressing the "radiance of life" with their luster and use of color.
On display at the exhibition are new works that were released just last year, as well as a representative work of a dynamic dragon and a healing bodhisattva painting, overwhelming visitors with the warmth and masterful brushwork that only pottery can provide.
Take this opportunity to experience luminous pottery paintings in the exceptional setting of the historic Toji Temple.
