The Shiki Theatre Company will present the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" [Jerusalem Version] at the Kyoto Theatre from April 20 (Sat) to June 2 (Sun), 2024, as part of the company's 70th anniversary production. This will be the third time the musical has been performed in Kyoto since 2014! After the Kyoto performance, the musical is scheduled to tour throughout Japan.

Jesus Christ Superstar" is a rock 'n' roll musical about the last seven days of Jesus Christ's life before his crucifixion, which premiered on Broadway in 1971 and attracted attention for its frank depiction of the suffering of Christ as a human being, overturning the conventional deistic image of him. It attracted much attention.

Keita Asari, the director and founder of the Shiki Theatre Company, staged two versions of this work: the Japonesque Version (premiered in 1973) and the Jerusalem Version (premiered in 1976). Both of these productions were completely different from the original productions, and were masterpieces of Asari's direction, sublimating foreign musicals into a stage that resonated with the "Japanese heart". It was also the debut of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, composer of "Evita," "Cats," and "The Phantom of the Opera," in the world of musicals.
