The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the museum's opening, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto will hold the exhibition "Rethinking HANREISHA: The Age of Avant-garde Ceramics" until September 24, 2023 (Sun.).
The avant-garde ceramics group Souryosha, formed in 1948 by Kazuo Yagi, Tetsuo Kano, Hikaru Yamada, Misuke Matsui, and Osamu Suzuki, has led the Japanese ceramic art world for 50 years, with members changing hands.
This exhibition focuses mainly on the period up to 1973, the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Shiryosha, and also includes works by the Shikoukai, which developed avant-garde ceramics at the same time as the Shiryosha. Through approximately 180 works and related materials, the exhibition introduces the development of "avant-garde ceramics" in the Shiryosha.
