Atago Shrine
Atago Shrine is the headquarters of the 900 or so Atago shrines throughout Japan, and is located on Mt. Atago (924 meters above sea level), the highest mountain in Kyoto City. Atago Shrine has long been known as a shrine with a sacred power for fire prevention. The approach to the shrine is filled with tens of thousands of worshippers every year, and it is said that worshippers who visit the shrine from the night of July 31 to the early morning of August 1 will be blessed with a thousand days' worth of fire prevention and suppression. On the day of the festival, the 4-km trail (Omotesando) from Kiyotaki at the foot of the mountain to Atago Shrine at the summit will be lit until the next morning, and buses will run extra late on July 31 between Arashiyama Station on the Keifuku Electric Railway and Kiyotaki. For the detailed schedule of the shrine's offering of prayer and red seal, please refer to the following website.hereconfirmed. The gomadaki ritual was cancelled.
