Until October 9, 2023 (Monday/holiday), "Fan Fun FUN ~Fan Fan Nice" will be held at [Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan].
Said to have been introduced from China in the early 8th century, uchiwa fans were used not only to keep cool, but also to ward off insects and evil spirits. On the other hand, folding fans, which were made by improving uchiwa in the Heian period, are also useful as props for tea ceremonies and dances, and often appear in paintings as a motif that expresses dignity and femininity. Fans are still a familiar art, and they sometimes play a role as advertising media and signature colored paper. In this exhibition, with the cooperation of Hakuchikudo, a long-established fan shop in Kyoto, we will introduce Japanese paintings depicting uchiwa fans and fans, as well as various fans made mainly from the Edo period to the present day.
