Higashi-honganji Temple (Higashiyama Jyoen)
Higashi-honganji Temple (Higashiyama Jyoen), the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect, holds the "Choyo no Kane" (bell tolling ceremony) every year on New Year's Eve. Normally, only priests are allowed to strike the temple bell, but the general public is welcome to do so. Also, from January 1 to 3, the only bell tolling ceremony in Japan, "Kasho no Kane" is held. Visitors can toll the bell not only on New Year's Eve but also on New Year's Day. The bell tolling is held during the daytime (11:00-14:00) on all days, so bring the whole family and visit the temple.
