Located near the Trolley Arashiyama Station, the only shrine in Japan dedicated to "hair" (ogami jinja) is tucked away by Ogura Pond.
The shrine was opened in 1960 by people related to the hairdressing industry, and its deity is Masayuki Uneme no Suke Fujiwara, who is said to have been the first person to start the "hairdressing profession" in Japan during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Therefore, people who visit the shrine include those who are aiming to pass the national barber and beautician examinations, active stylists seeking to improve their skills, and those who have hair problems. Regardless of gender, people visit the temple with all their hearts to keep their hair healthy forever.
