Isoyama Appearance

A remarkable Japanese restaurant in Kiyamachi where you can enjoy the skills of the young owner [Isoyama]

October 11, 2024 open

The owner, Mr. Isoyama trained at Gion Maruyama, Sake Restaurant Terayama, and Osaka's kappo restaurant, Oryori Yamada, before setting up his own restaurant at the young age of 28. [He set up his restaurant along a narrow alley in Pontocho, the former site of Sake Brewery Terayama.

Isoyama Gujiyaki

All dishes start at 12,000 yen per course. Gujiyaki, grilled slowly over charcoal to a fragrant aroma, is a must for those who love the crispiness of the scales.

The course features about 15 dishes, which the chef hopes "customers can enjoy a variety of dishes little by little." Starting with a bowl, a light rice dish, and an entrée, the second half includes a mint salad to cleanse the palate, a fried dish, two kinds of rice, and somen noodles with broth, making it a luxurious composition at a reasonable price.

Isoyama small sweet potato bowl

Bowl of small potatoes. Rishiri kelp and a broth of dried bonito and tuna flakes mixed in the ratio of 8:2 give the bowl a clear and elegant taste. It goes well with mild white miso from Yamatoshi Shoten, a miso store in Kyoto.

All dishes are prepared with quality ingredients that Mr. Isoyama carefully selects at the market every morning. The elaborate dishes, which draw out the flavors of the ingredients without relying on seasonings, showcase his sophisticated skills.

Isoyama Abalone porridge

Risotto-style abalone porridge made from raw glutinous rice. The abalone liver sauce has a strong seashore flavor and is a perfect accompaniment to sake and other beverages.

The cozy restaurant with only eight seats at the beautifully grained wooden counter is filled with Showa-era songs and has the atmosphere of an old-fashioned bar.
