[2022] 25 Autumn Leaves Illuminations in Kyoto
Demachi Myone-do (Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto) is located not far from Demachi Bridge, which spans the confluence of the Kamo and Takano Rivers. The principal image of the temple is that of the Blue Dragon Myone Benzaiten, which was presented to Emperor Go-Fushimi by Yasuko, the eldest daughter of the noble Saionji Kimihira, during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Because of this history, the shrine has been worshipped as Benzaiten, one of the seven gods of good fortune in Kyoto, and is said to be especially beneficial for the improvement of one's craftsmanship and for happiness and good fortune. The temple is also the enclave of Daiko-myoji Temple, a family temple of the Fushimi-no-Miya family founded by Saionji Neiko and also the pagoda of Shokokuji Temple.
Behind the hall of worship is the main hall, Rokkakudo. Originally, the principal image was enshrined here, but it is now deposited in the Shokokuji Jotenkaku Art Museum. A copy of the principal image is displayed only during the Spring Grand Festival, the Snake Day Memorial Service, and the Bonfire Ceremony. A wooden statue of Benzaiten is enshrined in front of the main image.
A wooden statue of a white snake, said to be the messenger of Benzaiten, sits in the hall of worship. In addition, under the eaves of the building, there are tiles of snakes and pictures of snakes dedicated by painters, showing the devotion to Benzaiten.
