Takio Shrine is known for its blessings to improve one's luck at work.
Although the date of construction is unknown, it is said that Shimomura Hikoemon Shokei, the founder of Daimaru, was a devout follower of the shrine and prayed for prosperous business and family fortunes. The present shrine was built with the assistance of the Shimomura family between 1839 and the following year, during the latter part of the Edo period.
The main hall, with a hiwadabuki cypress bark roof, was moved from the former inner sanctuary of Kibune Shrine and enshrines three deities: Daikokuten, Benzaiten, and Bishamonten. 2023 saw the completion of the restoration of the main hall.
In front of the main shrine building, a hall of offerings, a place of worship, and a corridor are arranged in a row, forming a unique landscape with intricate roofs. The shrine pavilions, decorated with carvings of various animals and sacred beasts, are also unique in Kyoto City. Because of these features, eight parts of the shrine, including the main hall, the hall of offerings, the worship hall, and the cloister, have been designated as tangible cultural properties in Kyoto.
[When you visit the hall of worship at Takio Shrine, be sure to look up at the ceiling.
What catches the eye is a dragon carved from wood, swimming in the sky with ease. The 8-meter-long dragon sculpture is said to be the work of Shintaro Kuyama, a sculptor from the late Edo period.
The dragon is so lifelike that it looks as if it is about to start moving at any moment. There is even an anecdote that the dragon was locked up with a wire net because it was rumored that it moved out at night to drink water.
As a souvenir of your visit to the temple, you will receive a fortune made by a dragon. The adorable dragon will make you smile.
The sculpture and the omikuji, each with a different expression, will bring you good luck.
