November 16, 2023 open
On Kyoto Gokomachi opened in a renovated 100-year-old machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse) in Gokomachi, Kyoto. The owner, Suzuka Yamaoka, learned wagashi from a master she knew, and in November 2023, she opened the store of her dreams. The store is lined with tea utensils and vessels that are the specialties of Ms. Yamaoka, who enjoys collecting vessels. The shop is characterized by the depth of the machiya, which is said to be an "eel's bed," and the light and greenery shining through the tsuboniwa garden are soothing.
Daifuku is made mainly with ingredients from Kyoto, and only about half the usual amount of sugar is used. The sweets are handmade daily, one by one, using seasonal fruits, cereals, leafy greens, and other ingredients that make the most of their natural flavors. As the name of the store suggests, the sweets are both beautiful to the eyes and gentle on the body, warming the heart and soul.
