Shokokuji Temple (Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto), the head temple of the Shokokuji School of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism, is opening its Nippai, Gappai, and Hana-Temple in the Dharma Hall to the public for the first time until June 1, 2025 (Sunday).
The Nichitai and Gekitai tablets contain the tablets of many people, including successive Ashikaga shoguns, who were the greatest supporters of Shokokuji, Toyotomi Hideyori, who rebuilt the current Hodo, and Ito Jakuchu, an Edo-era painter with deep ties to Shokokuji. The ceiling, called hana-ceiling, is decorated with seasonal flowers and birds. Until now, the general public has not been able to see the ceiling because of the facilities, but this year, the ceiling was reexamined and opened to the public in conjunction with the "Spring Special Viewing.
Take this opportunity to visit the sun and moon tiles, which are symbols of the history of [Shokokuji], and enjoy the colorful ceiling paintings.
