Nishiki Ichiba is crowded with people during the day as "Kyoto's kitchen," but at night it offers a different kind of enjoyment. After the market is closed, creative paintings are painted on the shutters. These are the works of Ito Jyakuju, a painter who grew up in the Nishiki Market's produce wholesale shop. The shopping street, which has regained its serenity after the bustle of the daytime, looks like a museum at night. Why not take the time to view the works of Ito Wakaki at night, when the market has changed from its daytime appearance?
Gion Matsuri, one of the three major festivals in Japan, is a grand annual festival held in Kyoto from July 1 to 31 to pray for the banishment of evil spirits and epidemics. While the Yamahoko-junko is the most famous festival, the main event is the procession of three portable shrines (Shinkosai and Kankosai) dedicated to the deity of Yasaka Shrine. The three portable shrines will parade through the shrine's town, arriving at the Otabisho in Shijo Teramachi on the evening of July 17 and returning to the head office on July 24. One of the three, called "Nishi Goza," is an octagonal-shaped portable shrine with a phoenix on its roof, and is carried by the Nishiki Mikoshi Kai, a group of merchants from Nishiki Market, which was commissioned by Yasaka Shrine.
