The Gion Festival, a summer tradition in Kyoto, is just around the corner in 2024.
The Gion Festival season, which includes the two days of the Mae Festival (Mae-matsuri) Yoiyama (15th) and Yoiyama (16th), is full of gourmet foods offered by popular restaurants to make the Gion Festival even more enjoyable. Kohgetsu Kyo-gashi (Kyoto confectionery) produces wagashi with flexible ideas, such as Senju senbei (rice crackers with cream sandwiched between wave-shaped cookie dough). The popular freshly baked Mitarashi dumplings, which sell out before the end of the Gion Festival every year, will be available again this year. The dumplings are made by artisans on the spot, who carefully check the baking conditions of each dumpling to ensure that they are soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. KAMEYA RYOCHO (Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) is bringing a new style of Japanese confectionery to Kyoto, with products such as sliced yokan that can be baked on a slice of bread to make Ogura Butter Toast. At the "Gion Festival," visitors can enjoy the annual Uji kintoki shaved ice and Karasuwatamadamashi ice. The Karasuwadama ice is a product that was perfected after many prototypes to adjust the sweetness. In addition to brown sugar made from Hateruma Island brown sugar, it is topped with shiratama (white rice balls) and Karasuwadama bean paste that was specially cooked to match the shaved ice. Shunsai Imari (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) offers a variety of dishes using Kyoto vegetables and fresh seafood in an emotional atmosphere of a renovated Kyoto townhouse. The restaurant sells its annual dashimaki sandwich with kujo leek. The dashimaki tamago with kujo leeks, which has been cooked to a fluffy consistency and filled with dashi broth, is sandwiched between toast. The key to the flavor is the spicy mayonnaise. The zingy flavor is sure to be addictive!

Cafe OWL (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto) is popular for its lunch plates using fresh ingredients and homemade sweets. During the "Gion Festival" season, the popular Hamo no Tempura Gion Festival set is available every year! The set includes freshly fried, fluffy and crispy hamo (conger eel) tempura, shiso leaves and chikuwa tempura. Enjoy it with your favorite seasoning of either green tea salt or plum sauce.

At "Gion Matsuri," pork kakuni croquettes are served at the store. Slowly stewed tender pork kakuni is a specialty of Manzaratei NISHIKI (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture). Ise Genroku Hachibana-ya, a long-established Japanese confectionery established in 1708 (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto), produces edible "yakuyaku-yoke" (bad luck repellent) raw chimakis to be given to the Takayama Preservation Society. The uchi-maki are pure white and chewy, wrapped in bamboo leaves with a talisman to ward off bad luck. This whiteness and chewiness are achieved by using domestically produced rice flour and steaming the rice while carefully monitoring the finish. The Yoiyama Warabimochi, sold at the festival, is eaten cold and has a melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Sakegabo Ich (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) is a Japanese restaurant where customers can enjoy seasonal ingredients on a menu that changes daily. During the Gion Festival, the restaurant will sell a limited number of hamo cutlet burgers made with hamo (conger eel) from the Seto Inland Sea, which is in season during the summer. Be sure to try this unique Kyoto hamburger topped with Shibazuke tartar sauce. The homemade shaved ice (two kinds: strawberry milk and green tea strawbimochi), also on the limited menu, is also popular every year.

The shimidare pork buns from the Beijing restaurant Zenjo Hanpochi in Shijo, Kyoto (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) are a Gion Festival specialty that is so popular that people line up every year to get their hands on one. Each one is carefully handmade with a wish to eliminate bad luck, and at approximately 13 cm in diameter, it is a hearty treat. The inside is stuffed with large ingredients such as pork, shiitake mushrooms, yama-kurage mushrooms, and bamboo shoots. The dish is served with a generous amount of the special sauce, which is served separately.

Eirakuya, established in 1946, is a long-established shop dealing in karaimono (tsukudani) and amaimono (confectionery). The Muromachi store (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) offers mizu-azuki only during the Gion Festival. The popular mizu-azuki is a drinkable mizu-yokan with a refreshing sweetness that goes down your throat smoothly. It is recommended as an accompaniment to the "Gion Festival," which is expected to be scorching hot.

Boulangerie MASH Kyoto (Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) is popular for its Kyoto-style bread made by the owner who trained in Paris, France. The bakery is selling zongpan baked in bamboo leaves during the "Gion Festival" season. The dough is filled with sweet bean paste and white bean dumplings, giving the bread a Kyoto-style wagashi (Japanese sweet) flavor. To be sure to get your hands on one, it is recommended to visit the store early in the day.

Since its establishment, the restaurant's signature dish has been sui-gyoza, or water dumplings.
