[2024] Oni wa soto! Three Setsubun festivals in Kyoto that invite spring
Kyoto in May is a month full of food-related events. From a gathering of gyoza (Chinese dumplings) and meat brands from all over Japan, to Spanish and Taiwanese cuisine, to sake events at local breweries, here are some of the most noteworthy events to look forward to. This is a popular event where famous gyoza restaurants from all over the country gather, and last year over 100,000 people visited the event. This year's event is even more powerful, with not only gyoza but meat as well! Gyoza restaurants and butcher shops boasting of their taste from not only Kyoto but also Ibaraki, Aichi, Saitama, Shiga, Nagano, Fukuoka, Miyazaki, and Osaka prefectures will gather.

The main focus of this cultural festival is the exchange of gourmet food and music. At the food, drink, and merchandise booths titled "Islanders' Market," in addition to the sale of limited-edition beer and pineapple cake, there will also be a lineup of many products only available this time, including limited edition dishes from Osaka-based Taiwanese breakfast restaurant "wanna manna" to be enjoyed at the venue. In Kyoto, the sacred land of meat, carefully selected brand beef and pork from all over Japan will be gathered. The event will be held in cooperation with the production areas that ship beef and pork to the Kyoto Meat Market, which has supported Kyoto's food industry, and famous restaurants in Kyoto that purchase from the market on a daily basis. More than 25 popular Spanish restaurants and liquor importers in Kyoto will gather for the event, offering their specialties such as meat, fish, and tapas, as well as drinks. Sake breweries themselves organize these events, and each of the eight breweries in the Tango region will be the venue for a simultaneous opening of their breweries, where visitors can enjoy tours of the breweries, local sake, and delicious local food, which are not normally accessible to the public. The event also features special events such as sake discussions with the toji, the person in charge of sake brewing, with whom visitors usually have little contact, and sake that is not for sale, which is available only on the day of the event.
