Originally built in 1601 by Tokugawa Ieyasu in Fushimi for teaching and learning [Engo-ji School], it was moved to its present location in 1667. The Jugyu-no-niwa garden, with moss, green maple trees, and green bamboo forest covering the field of view, respects nature as it is, and the garden, with the necessary care, gives us a moment of peacefulness to simply be in nature. Many people appreciate the garden by using the pillars as picture frames.

Founded in 853 as a dojo of Shingon esoteric Buddhism, it is now the head temple of the Seizan Zenrinji School of the Jodo Sect. It is known as one of the best places in Kyoto to view the autumn leaves, and the green maples are exceptionally beautiful. Currently, approximately 3,000 maple trees line the temple grounds.

It began as a small hermitage surrounded by mountain foliage about 680 years ago, and became a Zen temple of the Soto sect when the main hall was built in the Edo period (1603-1868). Upon entering the main hall, the first thing you see are two windows, one for lostness and the other for enlightenment. As you quietly watch the blue maples swaying beyond the window frames, you will feel grateful that you are part of nature and that you are being kept alive.
