Departing from Kyoto! Walk through history at the "2021 Kumano Pilgrimage" organized by Wakayama Prefecture
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the registration of "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" as a World Heritage Site in 2024, Wakayama Prefecture will hold the "Kumano Pilgrimage in 2024". Participants will wear white costumes and walk along the Kumano Kodo Kii Road, recreating the "Kumano Gokou" ceremony held by the emperor and aristocrats in the Heian period (794-1185).
The event will start on Saturday, December 9, with a departure ceremony at Jonan-gu Palace in Kyoto. After the ceremony, the participants will take a riverboat down the Yodo River to Tenma Hachikenya in Osaka. Haiku poet Mayuzumi Madoka will appear at the launching ceremony as the onna-in.
Starting on December 17, a total of eight relay walks will be held, each with its own schedule, allowing participants to tour the Kumano Kodo Kii Road under the guidance of a storyteller. This is an experience that is not usually possible, so please sign up and participate.
