Chion-in Temple is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism and was founded in 1175 by Honen Shonin, the founder of the sect, who built a hermitage near the present Mikado Hall.

The origin of the temple is the pagoda of Hodan-ji Temple, which was built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1379.
