'Tis the season to enjoy dining on kawadoko (riverbeds) in Kyoto under the glare of fresh greenery. In this issue, our local editorial staff introduces some recommended kawadoko that can be experienced easily in Kyoto's Kamo River, Kibune, and Takao areas. Why not spend an elegant time while listening to the murmuring of the river?
This Kyoto-style restaurant is tucked away at the end of a stone-paved alley, making the most of the atmosphere of a former ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). In addition to the kawadoko on the first floor, the terrace seats on the second floor are also popular, where you can enjoy the view of the Kamo River from a slightly higher vantage point.

This restaurant is based on the concept of straw-yaki and mizutaki. Straw-frying is a technique often used for bonito tataki, but this restaurant also offers ingredients such as sea bream, duck, and Kyoto red chicken, which you may not encounter in other places as straw-frying. The fresh ingredients used for straw-fired bonito are all served as tataki, with salt for the sea bream, soy sauce for the duck, and ponzu (Japanese citrus fruit vinegar) for the Kyoto red chicken. Enjoy changing the flavor with the condiments provided.

Even if you are just visiting Kibune on a casual solo trip, you can stop by here without a reservation. The zarusoba, perfect for this season, is made with a ratio of 2:8, and is served with cold water to tighten the noodles and give them a smooth texture. Especially in the hot summer months, we recommend the cold soba set, made with buckwheat flour produced in Shiga Prefecture and bathed in Kibune's famous water. It is a must-visit when visiting Kibune Shrine.

Many of the dishes are casual, such as udon noodles and set menus, and you can also use the teahouse only for coffee and tea, such as shaved ice and warabimochi (bracken rice cakes).
