Watakama Mug Ringo
In 2015, Kohei and Mayuko Watabiki established the ceramic studio WATAKAMA in Kameoka, Kyoto, with the aim of offering pottery that changes people's lives. [The pottery at WATAKAMA is produced in a style in which a mold is made after a finished piece is created based on a theme, and the same design is produced one after the other. The "Ringo mug" shown in the photo is a mug with a chubby, apple-like shape that fits in well at the dinner table, and is recommended as a companion for daily life.
Imagining the user and the scene of use, Mr. and Mrs. Watabiki plane the mugs to create a gentle mouth feel and texture. The mouth is made a little thicker to make it more pleasant to the touch, and the sides are thinned to feel the temperature of the drink when held in the hand, adjusted to the nearest millimeter. The base of the cup is made heavier to lower the center of gravity, and the cup is designed to be well-balanced when placed on the table, giving it a great sense of stability.
The Watabikis are fond of animal bones, stones, and other forms found in nature, and they aim to create such an atmosphere in their pottery as well. One of the charms of the "Ringo" mugs, available in two colors, light beige "caramel" and brown "candy," is that the colors change slightly each time as they are made by mixing the glaze themselves and using natural ashes. The artist also dares not to create the same pattern or shape when applying the white "caramel" and shaving the cups with a planer. Everyone is different and everyone is good. This is what this mug conveys.
The mug Ringo, with its appealing color and shape that evokes the beauty of nature's form, is a versatile item that can be coordinated with a variety of tableware. For example, the "candy" mug can be coordinated with other tableware of the same color, as well as with blue and other vivid-colored tableware and glassware. Mugs that can be the star of the show are sure to play an active role at teatime and dinner tables.
The most distinctive feature of this mug is the handle! It is shaped so that one finger can fit through the handle, so you can wrap both hands around the whole thing and spend precious time feeling the temperature of your warm beverage. With a capacity of approximately 230-250 ml, it holds a generous amount of coffee or tea, and can also be used for soup and bread for a wonderful breakfast time on the table.
The mugs are born from the lifestyle of Mr. and Mrs. Watabiki, who moved their base to Kitanosho, Chiyogawa-cho, Kameoka in 2020 and are working while renovating an old private house. It is a wonder that the heart becomes soft and rounded when you hold the potty shape in your hand. Why don't you take a break from your busy life with a mug that soothes your heart?
The coffee was accompanied by a "M Kyoto mall", which is a gourmet website of Kyoto, that offers a wide variety of products, such asMuracha Pudding Matcha/Hojicha set of 3 eachThe pudding is made with tea, a specialty of Minami Yamashiro Village, the only village in Kyoto Prefecture.
