Although the rainy season has begun and the days remain dreary, you can enjoy the fresh and beautiful hydrangeas that color early summer in Kyoto from early June to early July. In this issue, we will introduce a list of hydrangea viewing spots recommended by our local editorial office.
Yanggok-ji Temple is a place of prayer for the healing of eye diseases. The temple is famous for its hydrangeas, with approximately 5,000 in bloom. From the corridor called "Hydrangea Corridor" that runs from Shoin to Okunoin, visitors can enjoy the forehead hydrangea that is usually at its best from early June to early July. In recent years, the temple has also become known as the "temple of flower water", and the flower water with hydrangeas floating in it is refreshingly beautiful.

Best time to visit: Mid-June to early July
Period: June 1 (Wed) - June 30 (Thu), 2022, 9:00 - 17:00 (last admission at 16:30)

Fujimori Shrine is a shrine dedicated to the god of luck and the guardian of horses. There are two large hydrangea gardens on the shrine grounds, where 3,500 hydrangeas of about 40 varieties bloom, including Western hydrangeas. On Saturdays and Sundays during the festival period, the shrine grounds become crowded with people as they hold dedication ceremonies such as kemari (Japanese game of foot ball), taiko drums, and gagaku (ancient Japanese court music).

Mimuroto-dera Temple, known as one of the most famous flower temples in Kyoto, is also called "Ajisai-dera" (temple of hydrangeas). On Saturdays and Sundays from June 11 to 26, the temple is illuminated, creating a magical scene that differs from that of the daytime.

Umemiya-taisha Shrine is famous as a god of fertility and safe childbirth, and it is said that if you step over the straddle stone, you will be blessed with a child. The garden is a kaiyushiki garden with a view of Arashiyama and Kitayama, with 1,300 hydrangeas of 120 varieties, including tama-hydrangea, blooming from the east to the north of the garden.

Admission: Free in the precincts, 600 yen in the shrine garden
Zempuji Temple is known as the temple associated with Keishoin, the mother of Tsunayoshi Tokugawa, the fifth shogun of the Edo Shogunate. The Hakusan Hydrangea Garden, which covers an area of approximately 3,000 square meters, is decorated with approximately 8,000 hydrangeas, including Western hydrangeas, covering the entire slope. The temple is located on the mountainside of Mt. Shakashidake, so visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto city over the hydrangeas.

Sanzen-in Temple is known for its famous garden, Arikien Garden, with its beautiful cedar grove and moss. The small hydrangea in mid-June is followed by the rare star hydrangea, which blooms in turn, until early July.
