[Interview with Yo Seike, creator of TOKINOHA Ceramic Studio

[We interviewed Mr. Yo Seike, who handles the TOKINOTANE brand of TOKINOHA Ceramic Studio, about his thoughts on craftsmanship.

1.Q. What made you decide to become a potter?

I attended an art high school and majored in graphic design, but I could not imagine continuing this as a career in the future, so I changed my direction to become a pottery maker. After graduation, I entered the Kyoto Prefectural College of Advanced Ceramic Technology, which trains successors to Kyoto's traditional crafts, Kyoyaki and Kiyomizuyaki, and studied the knowledge and techniques of pottery making in earnest. I still have a lot of things I don't know. Even now, there is still so much I don't know, and I struggle every day with the mountain of things I have to learn. His daily work at TOKINOHA Ceramic Studio includes applying glaze-repelling chemicals, packing the vessels in the kiln, and unloading the kiln. In between these tasks, I face the creation of "TOKINOTANE" vessels.

2.Q. What has TOKINOTANE done recently?

Thin and light "shiro-kuro" series V-cup

3.Q.What is your favorite 3 o'clock snack?

If I had to venture a guess, I would say Daifuku. I like the simplicity of soft mochi and anko (red bean paste), and I also like seasonal fruits in a big bowl for a special feeling.

4.Q. What are some of your favorite writers and artists?

Recently, I found an interesting artist, Mr. Noritake Kinashi. This year, I visited the "Noritake Kinashi Exhibition Timing-The Light of the Moment" at the [Kyoto Culture Museum] and was entertained by his colorful and positive works.
